On November 20, 2014, the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs celebrated its 90th anniversary with a gala dinner at the School’s new home in the nation’s capital, the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

During the event, we celebrated our history and took stock of the contributions that Maxwell has and will continue to make to public service, civic engagement, and enlightened citizenship. And we also unveiled the Maxwell School’s plans to carry its contributions into the future, with new and enhanced citizenship initiatives over the next ten years leading to Maxwell’s centennial in 2024. We’re calling this the Tenth Decade Project.

In the following video, students, alumni, faculty, and administrators share reflections on how Maxwell’s intertwined traditions in citizenship education and interdisciplinary teaching make the School a different — and special — place.

The inaugural Daniel Patrick Moynihan Spirit of Public Service Award was presented at the event to Lauren Bush Lauren, founder and CEO of FEED Projects, whose life and work reflect a creative and passionate commitment to public service and to translating ideas into action — qualities that characterize the exceptional career of Senator Moynihan as a thinker, teacher, and leader.

This short video describes the purposes for the Moynihan Award and some of the accomplishments that qualified Ms. Lauren for it.

University of Miami President and former Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala and former NASA Administrator and chancellor of Louisiana State University Sean O’Keefe, both Maxwell alumni, co-chaired the event. They were joined by CBS newsman Bob Schieffer, who served as the evening’s emcee.

Even if you weren’t there, you can experience the speakers’ remarks and the videos included in the “Night for Maxwell” program by viewing the following recording of all the podium activities at the gala.
